Folding is an action performed for the purposes of storage and compression: when folding clothes, we aim for saving space and creating a spatial order; and in the art of origami, pieces of two-dimensional paper are folded into myriads of animals and objects. Meanwhile, “the fold” as an important philosophical concept points to the overlapping of space, movement, and time, through which the world is understood as infinite crisscrossing folds in space-time compression. In FOLD, the artist uses stories taking place in urban space as a lead-in, and perceives the compression and folds of cities, architecture, and landscape as an abstract form, utilizing the spatial form of folded paper as a metaphor for architectural interior space and configuration of urban settlements. Layering and interweaving history and space, the work unfolds an infinitely dense spatial narrative in the area of Wanhua, similar to that unveiled through the rabbit hole in Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. Through the interaction between stories and the folds converted from surrounding sites now only existing in memory of local elders, such as Kenan Street, bamboo grove, Machang, military dependents’ villages, air raid shelters, fermentation workshops, and general’s residence, etc., this work engenders a multilayered narrative using the folded space, and interprets the tales and anecdotes of these places through people’s collective narratives and memories.
